Mainly known for his musical talents, rapper Akon has switched his focus to helping out the continent of Africa obtain the use of the sun. Many countries and villages in Africa are left in the dark when the sun goes down, costing the local economy to halt until the next day. In an effort to build the economy in Africa and provide electricity to many countries, Akon has joined with two other individuals on a mission to provide all of Africa with electricity through the use of solar power.

Today, 600 million Africans, living in rural areas, do not have access to electricity. This forces shops and towns to shut down once the sun sets. Many kids families are forced to rely on candlelight to accomplish tasks at home or even finish school work. The use of candles and other toxic fuels to produce light has resulted in over 3.5 million deaths each year due to fires and harmful pollutants.

In February of 2014, Akon Lighting Africa was created in hopes of bringing electricity all across Africa and laying a foundation for future development. Akon along with the political leader, Thione, and entrepreneur, Samba Bathily, have provided 14 African countries with street lamps, domestic and individual solar kits that allow electricity to be created through solar panels. Akon Lighting Africa plans on visiting 25 more countries in 2016.
